A Quiet Workspace for Focused Work in a Hospital Environment
Oulu University Hospital (OYS), F Imaging Department, Oulu, Finland
When the acquisition of an MRI scanner for the imaging department in Oulu University Hospital’s new F Building was postponed, the hospital needed a new purpose for the reserved space. The solution was five Vetrospace workspaces, providing radiologists with quiet, soundproof environments designed for focused diagnostic work and medical image analysis, supported by excellent indoor air quality for all-day use.
Background
The F Building at Oulu University Hospital (OYS) was completed as part of the extensive OYS 2030 renovation program, which aims to modernize the hospital’s facilities to meet the healthcare needs of the future. The imaging unit had a space available that was originally designed for an MRI unit. When the decision was made to postpone the equipment purchase, the hospital sought a solution to quickly put the area into productive clinical use.
The Solution
Four Vetrospace L workstations and one Vetrospace M+ workstation were installed in the space to serve as personal workstations for radiologists. The workspaces were carefully integrated into the available area by optimizing door locations, enabling efficient use of the existing floor plan.
Within these soundproof workspaces, doctors can review medical images, dictate reports, and perform diagnostic work without distractions from the surrounding environment. Adjustable lighting supports screen-based image analysis, while the location of the workspaces close to clinical operations enables efficient workflows and seamless collaboration with other healthcare professionals.
Because the workspaces are intended for full-day use, indoor air quality was a key consideration. CO₂-controlled ventilation continuously adjusts airflow according to occupancy, ensuring fresh air and comfortable working conditions throughout the day. The modular healthcare workspace solution allowed the hospital to implement the project quickly and without major structural modifications.
The Benefits
An underutilized hospital space was rapidly transformed into productive healthcare workspaces without extensive construction work. Radiologists gained quiet and private workspaces that support concentration-intensive specialist work. The solution improved space utilization, workplace privacy, and operational efficiency while providing the hospital with a flexible way to adapt healthcare facilities to changing needs.
Soundproof workspaces with demand-controlled ventilation support diagnostic accuracy, staff concentration, and efficient working practices in an environment where precision, confidentiality, and focus are essential.
The project was delivered in collaboration with Modeo Oulu, which acted as the local Vetrospace partner and was responsible for project sales.
