Lower Emissions and Smarter Materials: Vetrospace Transitions to Recycled Aluminum in 2025
20 May 2025
As part of our ongoing sustainability work, Vetrospace has transitioned to using recycled aluminum in our modular workspace solutions starting in early 2025. This change directly supports our goal of reducing the environmental impact of materials used in production—without compromising on quality, durability, or performance.
According to supplier data, this switch is expected to cut emissions from aluminum components by approximately 82 kg CO₂e per ton, a reduction of over 60% compared to primary aluminum.
Smarter Sourcing with Lower Impact
The recycled aluminum is supplied by Mäkelä Alu, a Finnish partner whose aluminum profile products are designed to meet stringent sustainability criteria. The material is sourced from high-quality scrap—both from industrial production and end users—and re-cast at the supplier’s own foundry. This helps reduce both raw material demand and transportation emissions, supporting a more circular, local supply chain.
According to Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), the emissions from powder-coated recycled aluminum profiles are 2.59 t CO₂e per ton, compared to the European average of 6.7 t CO₂e per ton for primary aluminum. These calculations follow international standards ISO 14025 and EN 15804:2012 + A2:2019.
Responsible Materials with Long-Term Value
Our material choices are guided by both environmental performance and functional longevity. The shift to recycled aluminum is one of several steps Vetrospace is taking to reduce the lifecycle impact of its products.
We design our office pods for long-term use, and their modular structure makes them easy to relocate, reassemble, or upgrade—an important feature for dynamic work environments or evolving office needs. This adaptability helps reduce waste and supports a lower total carbon footprint over time.
All Vetrospace pods are manufactured in Finland, and we prioritize local sourcing whenever possible. This strengthens supply chain transparency and helps minimize emissions related to logistics.
Built with Better Materials
Vetrospace selects materials that meet high environmental and health standards. This includes:
- Recycled or renewable components, such as FSC-certified wood, recycled metals, and low-emission acoustic materials
- Avoiding hazardous or non-renewable materials that could harm ecosystems
- Working with suppliers that align with our Code of Conduct, including sustainability, waste responsibility, and ethical labor practices
Our pods are also designed for excellent indoor air quality, using low-VOC adhesives and finishes, and include energy-efficient features such as LED lighting and low-energy ventilation systems.
Smarter Workspaces, Lower Footprint
We believe that high-performance workspaces can—and should—be built more sustainably. Our move to recycled aluminum is one step among many toward that goal. We’ll continue to share updates as we further improve the environmental profile of our products.
